Incoterms 2020 and Real Cost
EXW FOB CIF DDP and responsibility allocation

Analysis
Incoterms 2020 allocate delivery, cost and risk responsibilities; they do not by themselves determine transfer of title or payment methods. FOB and CIF are rules for sea and inland-waterway transport.
Practical approach
A quotation stating only EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP is incomplete. Specify the named place, insurance scope, customs responsibilities and applicable duties.
Quotation comparison example
Under EXW, buyers may take on substantial transport and export arrangements; FOB allocates responsibilities differently at the loading port. CIF includes carriage and minimum insurance obligations but not every destination charge. DDP requires particular attention to import formalities and taxes.
Decision framework
Before acting, document the product scope, destination market, verifiable sources, responsible parties and material risks. Compare alternative scenarios and recheck variable information such as regulations and prices at the time of transaction.
Quotation comparison example
Do not compare EXW and DDP prices directly. Normalise inland haulage, export formalities, main freight, insurance, import duties and delivery points. Assess whether DDP is workable given importer registration and tax responsibilities.
Implementation checklist
- Document product, destination market and commercial scope.
- Link source documents, specifications and accountable owners.
- Compare at least two cost and delivery scenarios.
- Record risks, approvals and review dates.
- Revalidate current regulations and quotation terms before committing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the first step?
Define the product, target market, quantity and commercial priorities.
Is the information current?
Regulations, prices and logistics conditions change; confirm them with primary sources before transacting.
Do Incoterms determine payment terms?
No. Delivery rules do not by themselves govern payment method, transfer of title or remedies for breach.
When does risk transfer under CIF?
Risk generally transfers when goods are on board at the port of shipment, even though the seller pays freight.
Can DDP be used in every market?
No. Seller importer-of-record capacity and tax obligations must comply with local law.
Do Incoterms govern title transfer?
No. Ownership and payment require separate contractual provisions.
Why consider FCA for containers?
It may better reflect the actual handover point to the carrier.
